15 years of connecting Great Britain and the Netherlands

BritNed is celebrating 15 years of connecting the electricity grids of Great Britain and the Netherlands.

Since becoming operational on 1 April 2011, BritNed has been dedicated to connecting Great Britain and the Netherlands with a safe and reliable energy link. As we look ahead to the next 15 years, we remain committed to delivering an exceptional trading experience with unique possibilities for our customers.

Celebrating 15 Years of BritNed

BritNed has recorded many significant milestones in the last 15 years, including:

Over the last five years on average, the BritNed interconnector has imported enough electricity each year to power 1.4 million homes each year.

A total of 92.8 TWh (terawatt hours) of power has been transported between Great Britain and the Netherlands since April 2011, helping to deliver more affordable and secure power for millions of homes.

A total of 81.7 TWh of power has been imported into Great Britain and 11.1 TWh has been imported into the Netherlands.

BritNed has operated with an average availability of 92.8% (April 2011 – April 2026), including outages and excluding dynamic overload capacity.

In September 2023, BritNed launched its award-winning trading and nomination platform, Empire.  It was developed to deliver the functionality, reliability, and flexibility to better serve customers.

Following the launch of Empire, BritNed introduced a unique auction in 2024, Buy Now, with Buy Now 2.0 released in 2025, as part of a major update to Empire, BritNed’s trading and nomination platform.

In December 2024, BritNed recorded over 5,000 days without a Lost Time Injury at both converter station sites. Safety is BritNed’s core value, and this milestone spans the entirety of BritNed’s operations since April 2011, highlights their strong safety culture and effective protocols. As of 1 April 2026, BritNed has now recorded 5,480 days with no operational LTIs.

BritNed has maintained strong ties with local communities. In Great Britain, our annual Charity Golf Day we raised more than £13,900 for the We Are Beams charity last year, supporting disabled children and their families in Kent and Medway. In the Netherlands, BritNed has been a longstanding supporter of the Airborne March, the world’s largest one day commemorative walk.

BritNed has also been awarded the Bronze and Silver Medway Workplace Wellbeing Awards. The Medway Wellbeing Programme supports business to find ways to help staff be healthy at work by ensuring appropriate policies are in place and the workplace environment is supportive for good health and wellbeing.
