An international organisation based in Great Britain and the Netherlands

We are proud to be an international team from around the world, we all have a passion to do our best for our customers and each other. We have a wide range of technical and commercial expertise with some of the most knowledgeable experts in the industry.

We own and operate the electricity interconnector between Great Britain and the Netherlands. We deliver world class asset reliability, vital to the energy needs of Great Britain and the Netherlands, and we do with it with a key focus on safety.

During 15 years of operation, BritNed has operated with an average availability of 92%, transported over 92 TWh of power. On our 15-year anniversary, we celebrated reaching 5,480 days without a Lost Time Injury (LTI) at the converter station sites in Great Britain and the Netherlands, covers the entire time BritNed has been operational.

In 2026, BritNed achieved ISO/IEC 27001 certification, a globally recognised standard for information security, becoming one of the first GB interconnectors to achieve the certification. ISO 27001 certification validates that BritNed’s approach to information security aligns with industry best practice.

We are registered in England and Wales under company number 04251409, with our registered office at 1-3 The Strand, London, WC2N 5EH. Our VAT numbers are GB785760188 in Great Britain and NL813642127B01 in The Netherlands. Our head office is located in Arnhem, Netherlands.

TRADING WITH BRITNED

Delivering reliability and trading flexibility

We endeavour to provide participants with the greatest choice and convenience in their trading activity.

In 2023, BritNed launched Empire – our award-winning, next-generation auction and nomination platform. Empire is the home for all BritNed trading activities, including; participation in long and short-term capacity auctions, capacity nomination management, viewing financial settlement overviews and generating custom reports.

We have a wide range of short and long-term capacity auctions (including the unique Buy Now auction) available on, Empire, and we are the only interconnector to offer nomination services which can help our customers get registered faster and trade sooner.In 2025, we began producing our own monthly Trading Report. This digital report has been designed to provide a comprehensive but concise breakdown of the Long Term, Day-Ahead, Intraday and Buy Now auctions, as well as nominations and flows on the interconnector. ‘Behind the Grid’ is a 4-part series from National Grid.

In episode 1, host James Stewart meets some of the team who work on the BritNed interconnector, both in the UK and the Netherlands, discovering how the interconnector works.

James meets Tommy Hoogstrate, Site Team Leader at the converter station in Maasvlakte on the Dutch side of BritNed, Stewart Whyte, Operations Director at BritNed, Andrew Hankin, Site Team Leader at the converter station on the UK’s Isle of Grain, and Ben Clifton, Control Room Operator at the converter station on the Isle of Grain. The team share what day-to-day life is like for the BritNed team who keeps the energy flowing between the UK and the Netherlands.

James also meets Matt Hinde, Head of EU Affairs at National Grid, who provides a unique insight into why it’s so important that we harness the power of the North Sea.
