BritNed one year in operation

The BritNed interconnector between Great Britain and The Netherlands, operated by BritNed Development Ltd. (BDL), the joint venture company of National Grid and TenneT, has now been in operation for one year (since 1 April 2011). Most power flows (80%) were in the direction from NL to GB.

BritNed Development Ltd. will hold its second Explicit Annual Auction tomorrow. The auctions will run from 13:00 CET on the 22nd November until 13:00 CET on the 23rd November 2011.

Planned outage 2012

Today the BritNed cable, the first electricity connection linking UK and the Netherlands has successfully gone live. It marks another step towards a single European electricity market.

Load flow commissioning of BritNed Interconnector

The BritNed Interconnector has completed the final phase of its construction and has started load flow commissioning during the months of February and March in order to commence commercial operation in April 2011.

Regulators approve BritNed Access rules

The Netherlands Competition Authority (NMa) and British energy regulator (Ofgem) today approved the rules for auctioning capacity on the BritNed electricity interconnector linking Britain with the Netherlands.

First Auctions BritNed planned for March

The 1st April 2011 is ‘Go Live’ date for BritNed's commercial operations. The link between Great Britain and The Netherlands will then be available for trading electricity between the GB and European markets. From week commencing 21st March 2011, BritNed will hold the first quarterly auctions (for April-June capacity) and monthly auctions (for April capacity). The first implicit auction for BritNed will be facilitated by APX-ENDEX on Thursday 31st March 2011 for the 1st April flow day.

Today marks a significant milestone for BritNed, a joint venture between National Grid and Dutch transmission company TenneT to build a high voltage electricity interconnector to connect the grids of the UK and The Netherlands, as work started to lay the first section of marine cable at the Isle of Grain in the UK.

BritNed starts marine cable laying at Maasvlakte

Today BritNed, a joint venture between National Grid and TenneT, started the first section of marine cable laying at Maasvlakte (in Rotterdam in the Netherlands). The 260 kilometre long cable will be laid from Maasvlakte to the Isle of Grain in Kent (Great Britain) and will make a significant contribution to the security and diversity of electricity supplies in both the Great Britain and The Netherlands.

National Grid and TenneT Holding today announce their intention to construct a new 260km 1,000 megawatt electricity interconnector - ‘BritNed’ - between the UK and Netherlands. The €600 million joint-venture project will increase diversity of supply and provide greater opportunities for BritNed’s customers to participate in European electricity markets and it will contribute to security of supply in both energy markets.
